Toning Up

It is a simple fact that the correct balance of cardiovascular and resistance exercises combined with the correct nutrition will bring your body fat down and give your muscles more shape. Sometimes, female clients have asked me whether weight training will “bulk them up”? The answer to that is no, as long as the number of lifts per exercise stays high.

Toning up is a common goal among people who start personal training or who work out themselves in the gym. Maintaining a high heart rate during cardiovascular and resistance / weight training is the key to creating toned muscles. Circuit style exercise is another very useful training approach, which I find works very effectively in many client situations. Effectively improving muscle tone requires an in-depth knowledge of the type, balance, order and variety of exercises available.

When I initially assess a client, I ascertain their current strengths and weaknesses and design a training program specifically based on each client’s goals, taking into account all relevant aspects of their health and exercise history.
