Coming from a background dominated by competitive sport, it is no coincidence that I train many clients who are themselves competitive athletes. The goals of these clients focus on improving and developing performance rather than the more general client goals of improving muscle tone and losing weight.
The qualifications and experience of training athletes over previous years has enabled me to establish specific routines directed at different sports people. I have done in depth research as part of my masters degree with regards to developing fitness for kickboxing. As such a wide range of fitness components are included within this sport, I use a number of the core strengthening, flexibility and power training drills to develop athletes specialising in other sports. Client feedback has been fantastic!
I have trained a number of athletes including golfers, tennis players, martial artists, runners and rugby players, both on a one-to-one basis and in group training sessions. ‘Functional training’ plays a large part in any athlete’s routine. It is essential that the work in the gym simulates the game or match situation as closely as possible. When I train athletes, I design programmes that ensure all the exercises are based around improving performance in that person’s particular sport. Taking golf as an example, core strength, spine mobility and flexibility are key fitness components to elite performance. Improvement in these areas, therefore, must be the focus of a golfer’s training program.
I have trained a large number of runners and have found that lack of flexibility is very often the reason why their performance has reached a plateau. Without full range of movement around your joints, there is only so much progress you can make in terms of your performance. I've achieved great client feedback from all the runners I have trained who I have taken through this type of training.
