Over the years I have gained a great deal of experience working with clients with wide ranges of injuries. Among the most common injuries are muscle tears, ligament strains and joint misalignment. I will work with a client who has been cleared by a physiotherapist or chiropractor for exercise. I will then either work with, or around, the injury depending on its type and severity.
Ligament damage to the knee and shoulder are common injuries, particularly among sports people. When recovering from these types of injuries, muscles surrounding the injured joint often become weak through a lack of movement, especially if the joint has been strapped up. Without expert guidance, these muscles may never regain their full strength and range of movement thus creating a permanent imbalance.
In the initial consultation, I gain a comprehensive picture of a client’s history with respect to exercise and injuries. I always stress how important it is that I know of any previous injury, no matter how old. In order to work safely and effectively with each client, I need to know if a muscle or ligament is, or has been, damaged, as damage can affect the natural movement pattern of that muscle or joint. Over time, (sometimes years) if this natural movement pattern is not corrected, imbalances can increase, leading in many cases to further injury.
I use routines that emphasise flexibility and simple movements whenever a client is recently returning to the gym after having had the ‘OK’ from a physio. I design a program to ensure all the muscles on the body develop to be of equal size and strength based on a ‘correction set’ approach to training. Simply speaking, this means working closely with the client, building strength and mobility to the injured body part and ensuring that you return to full fitness as quickly and safely as possible.
