Many clients come to me complaining of lower back pain. Over the years, it has become obvious to me that bad posture and weak core muscles are often reasons for lumbar pain. The key to fixing this problem, therefore, lies in analysing and correcting the poor posture and strengthening and balancing critical core muscles via appropriate and specific exercises. I like to work closely with and seek advice from Physios when dealing with these specific cases.
Tightness across the top of the shoulders is also a recurring problem among many of my clients. I found that people who spend 8 or more hours a day in a seated position will often have bad posture. This, in turn, causes their chest muscles to become very tight or even immobile. If the condition worsens, the whole movement patterns of the upper spine can be restricted. The muscles across the top of the back become weak and lengthened while the muscles across the front of the body become tight. This situation creates an imbalance which results in pain and stiffness.
A similar problem often occurs with the lower body, where the hamstrings, quadriceps and hip flexors can become very tight causing them to pull on the hips. If left unaddressed, the tightness worsens, ultimately changing the angle of the hips putting excess pressure onto the lower back. This again can cause debilitating degrees of pain and stiffness.
I have established a routine of exercises designed specifically for targeting weak and/or tight muscles in order to correct posture. Clients who come to me initially suffering from back pain and other posturally-related stiffness all benefit from such a specifically designed programme that leaves them pain-free and on their way to much greater overall fitness.
